Job description

The Maritime Environment team undertake the programmes and policy work required for the UK to meet its environmental targets, including net zero carbon emissions by 2050 in domestic maritime.

This role will provide you the opportunity to work on important environmental issues across Government, and with stakeholders from industry, academia and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). This role will focus on the management of the maritime environment programme to realise greater benefit in the decarbonisation of the sector and help to place the UK at the forefront of maritime innovation.

Your job will be as a Programme Officer and Secretariat within the Programme and Finance team, where you will be key in acting as secretariat for boards, including the Ministerially-chaired Clean Maritime Council; monitoring programme spend; and delivering the programme controls and scrutiny required to ensure the success of decarbonisation in Maritime.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Running the Clean Maritime Council, managing a joint chairing structure with the Minister and a senior industry chair.
  • Acting as secretariat for senior boards, managing attendees and agendas, engaging professionally with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinating and managing reporting processes and engaging with teams both internal and external to DfT to deliver high quality reporting outcomes.
  • Monitoring and challenging programme spending and enabling the team to deliver a well-managed research and development funding programme.

About you:

  • We are looking for someone who has exceptional communication skills and can express themselves in a confident and concise manner with colleagues at all levels.
  • You will represent the department both professionally and clearly, ensuring key messages are delivered to both internal and external stakeholders in a timely fashion.
  • You will have good attention to detail and take pride in producing work to a high standard.
  • Organisational skills are pivotal to this role and you will have the ability to deliver against multiple objectives, whilst maintaining the highest standards.
  • You work well with colleagues at all levels, and see the importance of building effective working relationships both within and outside of your immediate team.

Additional Information:

A minimum of 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
