Job description

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Communications Officer to join our team. This is an exciting time to join us as you will support the development of new digital communication channels and deliver exceptional communication across an agency of more than 6,000 people. You will help to motivate, inspire and engage our people, ensuring they understand what’s happening across the agency and how they contribute to its success.

We are a supportive, close-knit team, trusted by our key stakeholders to deliver high-quality communications and advice. No two days are the same and you will have plenty of opportunity to work on a variety of campaigns with a range of stakeholders across the agency.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Developing, and delivering, innovative and creative campaigns based on audience insight, using effective communication channels to engage audiences and maximise reach.
  • Writing engaging content that informs our target audience using effective story-telling methods to maximise impact.
  • Delivering communications to agreed time, quality, and standard working with the wider business to achieve a successful outcome.
  • Supporting the Corporate Engagement Manager to deliver a series of corporate events.
  • Reviewing internal communication processes with the aim of identifying improvements to processes and ways of working to deliver a best in class service.
  • Actively seeking and participating in communication learning and development to maintain professional standards.

Additional Information

This role will be based in Swansea, and we will be operating a hybrid working model that allows you to work between home and on-site giving you greater flexibility about where and when you work, subject to business needs and this also allows for ongoing support, development, and collaboration with colleagues.

Therefore, the expectation is that you will spend a minimum of 60% of your working time based at your principal workplace (DVLA). We would encourage you to discuss the working arrangements for this role with us during the recruitment process.

Person specification

We are looking for a passionate, enthusiastic and confident communications professional with experience in internal or external communications.

You are ambitious about what communications can achieve and believe in its power to challenge perceptions, influence and change behaviour and build strong, trusted relationships. You can listen to people and help them to tell a story geared towards the appropriate audience.

You are experienced in working in a fast-paced environment to tight deadlines, while maintaining high quality standards of writing. You have a good eye for detail and accuracy.

You are resilient and confident in dealing with people at all levels and understand how important building and maintaining strong relationships with others has on delivering successful internal communications.

You are experienced in supporting the delivery of corporate events.

You understand the value of regular evaluation to inform continuous improvement.

The Internal Communications Officer will need to be flexible and adapt to the changing environment. You can see the bigger picture as well as finer details, and are able to plan and manage several campaigns simultaneously.

Skills and experiences

  • Ability to develop and deliver imaginative and innovative internal communications campaigns that meet the needs of the message owner/audience.
  • Ability to write engaging content that captivates the target audience.
  • To quickly and comfortably translate complex information into plain English for all to understand.
  • Ability to adapt style and language of written content dependent on the channel, message, and audience.
  • Strong understanding of internal communications channels and how engaging communications can drive behavioural change.
  • Suitable experience of delivering content in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of how insight can be used to inform continuous improvement.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, trusted relationships with colleagues at all levels to achieve positive outcomes.
