Air Traffic Management (ATM) Researcher

We are hiring an Air Traffic Management (ATM) Researcher in the Research & Development (R&D) department at NATS, based at our centre in Whiteley, Hampshire.

NATS background in R&D

NATS R&D creates innovative ATM solutions to meet the UK’s aviation infrastructure needs, working towards a more sustainable future. We have a strong record of taking ideas from concept to implementation and are committed to developing novel solutions that deliver benefits to our stakeholders through collaboration with global partners across industry and academia.

Projects range in maturity from early prototyping to human-in-the loop simulations. The research challenges that NATS R&D are focussing on include:

  • Future Airspace & Services
  • Trajectory Optimisation
  • Human Machine Collaboration

NATS R&D also conduct world-leading research in the application of the latest emerging technologies including Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Twins.

The successful candidate will join a diverse and innovative team dedicated to driving positive change and achieving our shared goals.

Role and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work on a variety of projects ranging in scope from meeting short-term challenges to longer-term, larger scale modernisation programmes in collaboration with partners from across industry and academia.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a structured manner following established best practice, but also be capable of employing more creative problem-solving methods as the task dictates. They must be confident working on both self-guided and team-based research projects.

Qualifications & Skills

  • A good honours degree in a STEM related subject (relevant industrial experience will be considered)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of scientific, technical, and analytical techniques
  • An analytical thought process and methodical approach for solving complex problems.
  • Evidence of using high-level programming languages to support data-driven analysis/model development (Python/R preferred).
  • Good understanding of statistics
  • Effective communications to report results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Previous experience in a relevant role desirable
