Job description

No two days are the same for our Marine Surveyors. You could be inspecting a ship in Hull ensuring its meeting UK and International Regulations one day, working from home the next, and assessing oral examinations for seafarers the day after.

We have a number of Marine Surveyor positions available in the Engineer, Naval Architect, Nautical and Ship Surveyor disciplines. Please see the Role Profiles attached below for further information about the responsibilities associated with each role, and apply on the appropriate campaign.

The surveyor training will be provided as part of marine surveyor development scheme – which includes several courses and on the job training, delivered by experienced surveyors within your first 12 months in the role. Some of the typical responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspecting, auditing and surveying ships and maritime ship operators to safeguard that they meet UK, EU and international safety, management, welfare, security and anti-pollution regulations. Carrying out approval of stability information where qualified to do so. When qualified as a Nautical Examiner, undertaking oral examinations so as to ensure high standards of training and competence amongst seafarers
  • Carrying out safety management audits in straightforward and routine cases under the International Safety Management (ISM) code of ship operators and their vessels for ISM Document of Compliance (DOC) & ISM Safety Management Certificate (SMC)
  • Carrying out inspections of ships and port installations in straightforward and routine cases to ensure compliance with International Conventions, EU legislation and UK statutory requirements
  • As a qualified Port State Control Officer (PSCO) helping fulfil UK obligations under the Paris MOU Agreement and EU Port State Control Directive in the inspection of foreign registered ships calling at UK ports

To be successful, you will be an experienced Maritime Professional who holds the appropriate qualification as detailed in this advert.

You will have proven customer service skills and can make quick, effective decisions, that are always focused on achieving the best outcomes. You will be resilient, flexible and able to manage a varied workload with competing priorities. Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively build relationships with a variety of stakeholders across different cultures and industries will be a strength of yours. Please note, due to the nature of the role you will also be required to undergo a Counter-Terrorist Check (CTC) before commencing employment with us. Gaining CTC Clearance will require you to provide proof that you have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 full consecutive years from your date of application and only candidates who meet this requirement will be considered for the role.

Important Information

On occasion, there will be a requirement to work outside of ‘normal hours’.

You will be required to work and travel on official duty within the UK and short term visits overseas or offshore, which may involve regular overnight stays away from home.

A full UK driving licence and a passport valid for international travel are required.

Qualifications

Ship Discipline – The minimum academic qualification required is one of: An engineering degree accredited by IMarEST/IMechE as meeting the academic qualifications for Chartered Engineer Applicants without the qualification stated above, may also be eligible if they are Chartered Engineer (C. Eng) (through the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) or Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)), but in such cases evidence of the equivalent level of learning plus relevant marine industry experience will need to have be demonstrated to the satisfaction of an MCA S&I technical review panel.
