Safety Specialist

This safety and business critical role ensures the Swanwick and Prestwick Centres Air Traffic Control ‘System’ (people, procedures, airspace, and equipment) meets safety objectives and enables a provision of a safe service.

You will proactively address key safety risks and ensure necessary assurance documentation is produced. This requires enabling and support of the multiple subject matter experts and stakeholders within the Centres and wider NATS.

Other duties include:

  • Support Safety Management activities in line with requirements of the NATS Safety Management System and Operational needs
  • Manage Centres Safety Cases and maintain acceptance by the CAA Regulator, this includes critical review and approval of Safety and Assurance Cases for existing and new functional systems
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of Operational Systems to determine the safety impact of operational ATC and Engineering issues
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of engineering principles and practice, safety standards, plus an understanding of existing and future safety related ATC functional systems
  • Prioritise efficient delivery of safety assurance, Lead, manage, and support diverse teams
  • Facilitate Hazard and Risk Analysis activities
  • Monitor safety performance and set requirements for tracking action and recommendations on behalf of the Centres, maintain strong relationships with other Safety stakeholders
  • Co-ordinate with internal ATC and Engineering staff, also external groups; such as Service Owners, Designers, and Architects, Technical Designers, Safety Services, Project and Programme Managers
  • Attend regular safety liaison meetings, HAZOPs / HESAP and other safety workshops
  • Attend acceptance panels and phase reviews liaising with Centres Senior Management on future development of the Centres

Essential skills and experience:

  • An Engineering, Science, or Mathematics Degree and/or equivalent professional qualifications
  • Experience of producing safety assurance for large safety related systems either within Air Traffic environment, or similar safety critical industry sector
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to adapt style and approach, rapidly assimilate information, and deliver briefings at all management levels
  • Specialist knowledge and experience applying principal safety assurance tools and techniques e.g. for Hazard Identification and Analysis, Bow Tie Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis and Risk Assessments
  • Knowledge of human factors techniques for safety analysis
