Overview
West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in England, serving an area of 902km square and a population of more than 2.9 million people.
Our vision is ‘Making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier’.
This vision and the strategic goals outlined in ‘Our Strategy’ are what drives the people, professionalism and pride with which we serve our communities.
Are you passionate about community impact, inclusion, and leading meaningful volunteer programmes? We’re looking for an inspiring Volunteering Manager to shape and grow our service-wide volunteer offer, helping communities stay safe while supporting the people who generously give their time.
Reporting to the Senior HR Manager, the Volunteering Manager will play a key role in aligning the strategic development and day-to-day management of volunteering across WMFS. The postholder will work with senior leaders, operational teams, HR, safeguarding specialists and external partners to ensure volunteers are recruited, trained, supported and recognised in a way that delivers real community benefit and aligns with our service priorities.
Responsibilities
In particular, you will:
- develop and deliver a service-wide volunteering strategy, including the tracking and implementation of best practice and national policy initiatives
- ensure that the volunteer lifecycle is developed and tracked at all stages, ensuring that those that give their time for free feel valued and engaged
- ensure volunteer compliance against a range of essential elements, including DBS, health and safety, safeguarding, and data governance
- build strong links with community groups, charities, and public bodies.
Experience and skills
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- significant experience leading volunteer programmes or large-scale people initiatives
- a proven track record of turning strategy into delivery
- strong safeguarding, risk and compliance knowledge
- excellent communication and influencing skills
- confidence using data to inform senior-level decision making.
Benefits
We offer a friendly working environment and benefits including:
- flexible and agile working arrangements
- free, on-site gym facilities
- free, on-site parking.
We also offer access to an in-house occupational health (OH) facility, including OH health and fitness advisors, sports therapists, physiotherapists, cognitive behavioural therapy practitioners and counsellors.
In addition, employees have access to:
- 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme
- wellbeing programmes
- ‘blue light’ discounts across many retailers, through partner schemes
- Sports and Welfare scheme (for a small fee), with access to discounted products and services.
Diversity
We welcome applications from all eligible candidates. However, as women and Black and minority ethnic employees are currently under-represented in our service, we particularly encourage applications from these groups.
WMFS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults. We expect the same of every staff member.
Successful candidates will be subject to necessary pre-employment checks, including – where applicable – relevant level Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, qualifications, medical clearance, identity and right to work. All applicants will be required to provide two suitable references.
How to apply
To express your interest in this exciting opportunity you should submit your curriculum vitae alongside a detailed personal statement, outlining your skills and experience in relation to the role as detailed in the job summary.
Our recruitment and selection procedures reflect our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and adults. All staff and volunteers are expected to share this commitment.
