Our Strategic Communications Managers help to improve road safety in Great Britain by setting, co-ordinating and guiding the implementation of DVSA communication activity, based on insight.

You’ll lead on engaging and inspiring road safety messages that will help us achieve our vision of safer drivers, safer vehicles, and safer journeys for all. With 37.8 million vehicles on Great Britain’s roads and 73% of the population having a driving licence, your work will reach a huge number of citizens and businesses.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop DVSA’s key strategic communications plans within their assigned business area.
  • Support significant internal and external ‘business as usual’ initiatives, including actions to deliver the Communications and Engagement Strategy, in agreement with line manager.
  • Provide expertise to ensure clear and effective communications to directors and corporate senior leaders.
  • Protect and enhance DVSA’s reputation, act as trusted advisor, supporting clients, always looking at the wider impact of communications and highlighting issues.
  • Understand customer needs and explaining the work involved.
  • Own, manage and develop the corporate communications messages and channels – internal and external. Use insight to provide advice on what channels to use, target the correct audience, to achieve the required outcome.
  • Make sure all messages follow the correct guidelines/requirements for quality and approach, provide on what works well/best and evaluate if it was successful.

Person specification

We would love a confident individual to join us who can deliver the right messages to the business in a professional and clear way. You are brilliant at being able to adapt your tone of voice and mannerisms to reflect your audience. You are someone who loves to work closely with others and can express yourself in a confident and concise manner. You are adaptable and flexible, adjusting to the requirements and strategic direction of the business. You will thrive managing a varied and challenging workload and welcome autonomy to your role.

We would love someone to join us who can build rapport quickly with key people both internally and externally. You will be a natural communicator and able to hold your own during challenging conversations.

You need to have worked in a communication role and have demonstrable experience of working in strategic communications, media, digital or internal communications or a variety of these roles.

Additional information

There may be the possibility of occasional U.K travel. This may include some overnight stays.

You will hold or be willing to work towards gaining a professional qualification in communications eg CIM, CIPR, NCTJ, IOIC.

This role can be based in BristolSwanseaNottinghamNewcastle, Birmingham or Leeds. Your presence at one of these locations will form part of the working arrangements agreed with you. We operate a hybrid working model giving you greater flexibility about where and when you work. Our expectation is that you will spend a minimum 60% of your time at your base location. Visits to other DVSA sites or work locations count towards this.
