Reporting to the Head of People, the Senior HR Manager will play a key role in ensuring that HR activity aligns with, and enables the delivery of, business objectives.  You will lead and manage the operational delivery of the HR function within West Midlands Fire Service, overseeing various HR activities and providing advice and guidance to senior leaders within the service.

In particular, you will:

  • Develop and embed a proactive HR function, supporting the organisation to deliver its priorities and overall strategy
  • Ensure that all HR activity – including but not limited to Employee Relations cases – is accurate, timely, and compliant with current legislation
  • Understand and implement changes to practice so that WMFS remain legislatively compliant, ensuring that relevant training is developed to support employees and managers
  • Build and foster an environment for sound industrial relations, ensuring that relationships with trade unions are constructive
  • Foster an environment for continuous development – ensuring that trends are understood and that learning leads to positive changes within practice

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in a Senior HR role including a CIPD Level 7 qualification (or working towards)
  • A strong understanding of UK employment law and its practical application – evidenced by supporting complex Employee Relations Matters, up to and including liaison with ACAS and supporting Employment Tribunal processes
  • Excellent communication skills, together with the ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels and build credibility quickly.
  • Highly flexible and adaptable with an enthusiastic approach and a “can do” attitude.
  • Experience of working with trade unions
  • Ability to challenge standard processes and drive improvements.
