Job description

Maritime transport is the backbone of international trade and the global economy. The UK’s maritime sector is substantial: 95% of UK exports and imports are transported through shipping.

The UK Government has a net zero target by 2050 across the economy, including domestic shipping. In 2021, UK domestic shipping alone emitted more greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions than buses and rail combined.

Clean maritime technologies are immature and will vary according to ship type. The UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme in DfT is delivering a suite of Research and Development (R&D) interventions, designed to progress clean maritime technologies, such as electric, hydrogen and ammonia, from early concept stage to operational deployment. Major interventions include the Clean Maritime Research Hub, the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition and the Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure scheme.

This role will focus on the successful delivery of current interventions, managing grant funding schemes to ensure value for money and benefits realisation. The role will also support the design and implementation of future interventions, subject to further funding for the UK SHORE programme.

This role will give the successful candidate the opportunity to learn about the maritime sector, R&D and innovation, as well as develop their project management and policy skills. The UK SHORE team is welcoming with a focus on wellbeing and development.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the successful delivery of current UK SHORE interventions to ensure value for money.
  • Manage the relationship with key delivery partners, including Innovate UK and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), to deliver interventions.
  • Support the maximisation of benefits for existing interventions, through organising events and disseminating project outputs to stakeholders.
  • Help design interventions as part of a bid into the next Spending Review.
  • Support cross-divisional work to deliver the policies set out in the upcoming refresh of Clean Maritime Plan.
  • Lead on briefing and correspondence including briefings for ministers and responses to Parliamentary Questions.

For further information, please see the attached Role Profile.

Person specification

About you:

  • We are looking for someone who has experience delivering a project and has strong written communication skills.
  • You would be described as an enthusiastic and adaptable professional who is keen to learn and seize opportunities to develop.
  • You are dedicated and focused on getting the job done while contributing to a positive team spirit.
  • Organisational skills are pivotal to this role and you will have the ability to deliver against multiple objectives, whilst maintaining the highest standards.
  • You are detail-oriented and see the importance of building effective working relationships both within and outside of your immediate team.

Additional Information:

A minimum of 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
