What you’ll do

We currently offer two comprehensive programmes – one to train Community Police Officers and one to train Police Detectives. We are now expanding our offer to pilot a Frontline Leadership Programme, to support existing Police Officers to move into leadership positions.

The Frontline Leadership Programme has a strong focus on underrepresented groups within policing, specifically women and ethnic minorities, with an aim to equip them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to be effective leaders, line managers and change-makers in their force and communities.
The Progression and Development Officer is a unique role, requiring someone with a combination of coaching and mentoring skills, strong communication, and the ability to facilitate group training sessions. You will need to possess the skills and confidence to engage with a group of mature and capable programme participants over the course of the year-long programme, empowering and enabling them to lead their own progression journey.

As a Progression and Development Officer you will provide exceptional tailored intervention to participants throughout the programme. You will navigate the mentoring and coaching spectrum to ensure participants on the programme make rapid and sustained progress. You will ensure that participants utilise and build their own network, therefore enabling them to support their own leadership development beyond the programme.

Due to the nature of piloting a programme, you will need to be innovative and adaptable. You will work closely with other members of PNHQ, and therefore need to be comfortable reporting to and interacting with a wide range of stakeholders.

Your role will be to:

  • Instill confidence and a sense of insurgency in your participants so that they take forward an appreciation of their responsibility to create and deliver impact for communities.
  • Coach, mentor and empower participants to be successful in their promotion journey, being flexible with your approach for each individual.
  • Facilitate pre-designed group training at taught programme days.
  • Gain an understanding of specific force processes in order to effectively support participants with specific force requirements.
  • Providing tailored interventions to those from underrepresented groups to overcome specific barriers.
  • Support participants to conduct a gap analysis for all aspects of the programme, with consideration of the College of Policing Competency Values Framework.
  • Build effective and long-lasting relationships with key contacts with our partner forces.
  • Maintain accurate participant data and reporting regularly on your participants’ progress.
  • Identify and record risk, escalating where necessary.
  • Troubleshoot any problems and feedback improvements for immediate or long-term effect.
  • Create a positive working environment for you, your colleagues and participants during the programme, facing all challenges with a positive attitude.

What you’ll need

Essential: 

  • Ability to work constructively with people from diverse backgrounds from one’s own.
  • Operational policing knowledge or experience of a police training environment.
  • Proven leadership skills, with the ability to hold others to account.
  • Demonstrable experience in a coaching or mentoring role.
  • Experience of delivering both online and in-person training for busy professionals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships both internally and externally.
  • A genuine, demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in policing.
  • High level of personal resilience.
  • Experience of effectively managing a varied workload with competing priorities.
  • Collaborative, can-do attitude, actively looking for solutions in the face of adversity and troubleshooting swiftly and effectively.
  • Excellent IT skills including knowledge of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Comfortable with remote working and able to manage your own time.
  • An interest in, and understanding of, the policing sector and the values and mission of Police Now.
  • Willingness to travel within England and Wales and to work occasional evening and weekend events.
  • Vetting clearance or willingness to be vetted.

Desirable:

  • Degree qualified.
