Overview

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in England, serving an area of 902km square and a population of more than 2.9 million people.

Our vision is ‘Making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier’.

An opportunity is available within our Prevention Team, based primarily at our Safeside education centre in Birmingham. This role also involves travel to other West Midlands Fire Service sites, as well as educational and community locations across the region, where required.

Our prevention education programmes are vital to keeping our communities safer, stronger and healthier. Through these programmes, we work closely with schools, colleges, and a range of voluntary and statutory organisations to deliver life-saving safety messages.

To support this work, we are looking for motivated individuals to join our prevention practitioner team. In this role, you’ll deliver engaging safety education programmes and initiatives, helping to inspire positive change and enhance safety awareness. Sessions will take place at fire stations, in schools, at Safeside, and within other community venues.

Experience and skills

We’re seeking candidates with a basic understanding of ICT systems, such as Microsoft Office 365, and the ability to adapt to digital tools. Excellent communication skills are essential, as you’ll be working with a range of audiences.

The successful candidate will have:

  • experience of delivering workshops or programmes, either formally or informally, to children, young people, and adults
  • a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • a flexible approach to embracing innovative and digital ways of working
  • experience in preparing and packing away programme resources.

Benefits

We offer a friendly working environment and benefits including:

  • flexible and agile working arrangements
  • free, on-site gym facilities
  • free, on-site parking.

We also offer access to an in-house occupational health (OH) facility, including OH health and fitness advisors, sports therapists, physiotherapists, cognitive behavioural therapy practitioners and counsellors.

In addition, employees have access to:

  • 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme
  • wellbeing programmes
  • ‘blue light’ discounts across many retailers, through partner schemes
  • Sports and Welfare scheme (for a small fee), with access to discounted products and services.

Diversity

We welcome applications from all eligible candidates. However, as women and Black and minority ethnic employees are currently under-represented in our service, we particularly encourage applications from these groups.

WMFS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults. We expect the same of every staff member.

Successful candidates will be subject to necessary pre-employment checks, including – where applicable – relevant level Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, qualifications, medical clearance, identity and right to work. All applicants will be required to provide two suitable references.
