West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in the country, delivering prevention, protection and response services which contribute to achieving our vision of ‘Making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier’.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Prevention Officer Team Leader, within our Prevention Delivery Team.

Under the leadership of the Command Education Coordinator, you will have responsibility for management of the team, monitoring performance, capacity, and capability.

You will be leading and working alongside a team of Prevention Officers and Practitioners with:

  • adults with a range of complex needs, to reduce the risk of fire in the home
  • children and young people who may have complex needs, display fire setting behaviour or have an unhealthy interest in fire. You will provide education around actions and consequences.

As an individual with a passion for supporting those with multiple complex needs you will:

  • lead and manage the day-to-day work of the Prevention Officers and Prevention Practitioners in your team
  • work in a variety of non-WMFS settings, sometimes on a one-to-one basis
  • have a defined case load
  • engage with professionals who have shared responsibility for the adult, child or young person’s health care and support needs
  • undertake any necessary training that the role requires.

You will ensure that all interventions support individuals to reduce their risk and vulnerability to fire, and improve their health, safety, wellbeing and quality of life.

The ideal person for this role will be a confident leader with good interpersonal and communication skills.  Key to the delivery of service will be your ability to lead, support and develop the team so that they have the skills, knowledge and understanding to perform to the highest standards.

The position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to have a key role in, and contribute to, the development of new systems and processes to support the future direction of our prevention activities and education.

You may have to deputise for the Command Education Officer in their absence.

A driving licence would be advantageous.

Computer literate you will have experience of using a variety of software packages including O365, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and be able to make best use of available technology and cascade this across the Prevention Delivery Team.

WMFS offers a friendly working environment with good terms and conditions including:

  • generous flexi-time scheme and annual leave provision
  • free, on-site gym facilities

  • 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme
  • wellbeing programmes

  • Sports and Welfare scheme (for a small fee) – access to discounted products and services.

WMFS’s recruitment and selection procedures reflect our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults.  All staff and volunteers are expected to share this commitment.

We are committed to ensuring our workforce is diverse. Being a truly inclusive service is important to us. We welcome applications from all eligible candidates. However, as women and Black and minority ethnic (BAME) employees are currently underrepresented in our management roles, we particularly encourage applications from these groups.

To proceed with an application, please tick the ‘Apply’ button at the top right-hand side of the Oracle page.  The application process will close at 12noon on Thursday 16 May 2024.

Line manager support is required for internal applicants and should be submitted with your application.

Should WMFS employees become eligible for redeployment they will be given prior consideration for this role. If an employee is placed `at risk’ at any time during this selection process, your application may be delayed whilst their suitability for the role is considered. If they are successful, the vacancy will be withdrawn.
