The Logistics and Borders Directorate (LAB) in DfT acts as a single point of leadership representing the interests of the Department for Transport, and collaborating with the freight and logistics sector, to support the UK’s border arrangements and ensure the seamless flow of goods and people. As an island nation, the UK is dependent on friction-less borders to deliver the food, fuel and materials we need to prosper and drive economic growth.
LAB offers a dynamic, fast-paced environment where you’ll influence high-priority government policies and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams. The Transport Border Strategy team, within the Future Border Policy Division, develops long-term strategies to improve border policy and operations from the perspective of transport stakeholders who are key customers of the border (such as customs and bio-security checks), and tackle strategic border disruption risks.
This role requires a strategic policy professional and self-starter to lead implementation of our Transport Border Facilitation Strategy, working closely with DfT Ministers and senior officials. You will coordinate input DfT input into a wide range of cross-government and cross-border initiatives identifying and pursuing priorities for our sectors, including border digitalisation efforts with the Home Office and Border Force, while developing vital relationships across government in a challenging and impactful position.
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Leading on the development and implementation of DfT’s Border Facilitation Strategy to deliver on agreed priorities.
- Maintaining positive working relationships with a range of senior external stakeholders across Government and industry, being prepared to handle robust challenge and acting as a key point of contact between the Department and industry.
- Building and influencing a network of contacts from across the Department, Government and industry to maximise DfT’s impact on border policy.
- Act as the single point of authority for DfT’s development and input into the Government’s current and future border strategies.
- Leading and influencing policy development in a number of complex areas, spanning both DfT, wider Government and international policy, ensuring that DfT interests are considered.
- Monitoring and horizon scanning for upcoming border changes, making assessments on the level of impact and risks to DfT interests/stakeholders.
