This role provides senior technical leadership across complex transport programmes, shaping how engineering insight informs investment, policy and delivery decisions. You will tackle important technical issues, produce clear briefings for senior stakeholders, and champion smarter use of technology to improve outcomes and control costs. Responsibilities include overseeing a cross-industry best practice toolkit, scrutinising business cases, and strengthening capability across the organisation through expert advice, constructive challenge and practical support.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with the Chief Engineer and Chief Scientific Advisor’s office to support the development of the engineering profession, ensuring its profile is raised across the Department and development opportunities are enhanced.
  • Working in collaboration with Network Rail and the Office of Rail and Road to lead development of the Better Value Rail Toolkit which provides guidance on best practice in the initiation and planning of new transport projects.
  • Undertaking specialist engineering activities that benefit the Department’s project portfolio and policy delivery in line with your skills, knowledge and competence.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

  • Knowledge of infrastructure projects, especially the rationale for and the challenges of delivering new and upgraded infrastructure.
  • Undertaking continued professional development, seeking learning and development opportunities to increase knowledge and experience in a technical specialism and applying these appropriately.
  • Providing scientific, technical or engineering advice to policy teams.
