Job description
The Database Engineer role supports the run function and helps contribute to the build and support of a variety of database technologies across a mix of on-premises and Cloud platforms. To perform this role to a high standard, you will use your understanding of these technologies and how they are built, configured, and supported.
The run function responsibilities cover all aspects of a support to the numerous services, from providing support to the various teams, to assisting in data amendments, working with incidents, data integrity, security, and later performance, and resilience.
The support responsibilities cover all aspects of day-to-day maintenance of our many databases including such things as backup and recovery, patching, storage management, monitoring, access and security, data fixes, and incident handling.
Database Engineers need to assist on engagement with other software engineering and infrastructure teams as well as business stakeholders, so communication skills are key to the success of the role.
Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:
- Contributing to the smooth running of our production databases such that they achieve our high availability, resilience, performance, and security objectives.
- Contributing to the build and support of data streaming system.
- Optimise the database configuration for each database technology and operating platform.
- Reviewing all aspects of a database’s configuration and working procedures and suggest ways in which they could be improved.

Person specification
You’ll have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt your delivery to suit the team you are interacting with.
You can learn new processes thoroughly, using your understanding to support the needs of DVLA and our teams.
You are experienced in resolving incidents and problems as part of a team and on your own initiative, and can confidently take ownership of change tasks to deliver database changes to enhance or maintain security, data integrity, design and performance.
You will be a self-starter who looks to add real value to ITS. You are someone who can build rapport quickly with a range of stakeholders.
You will have strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks to a high standard while meeting deadlines.
You are confident in the use of at least two of the following database technologies:
- Oracle
- SQL Server
- MongoDB
- PostgreSQL
