Senior Business Intelligence Analyst

Who are we

We are Hastings Direct – an agile, data and digitally focused general insurance provider who offer services to the UK car, van, bike and home insurance markets.

It’s our attitude and the way we run our business that makes us different. All of our actions are based on our 4Cs ways of working which means we focus on getting it right for our colleagues, customers, company and community.

As well as working on our 4Cs principles we also have the ambition of becoming the UKs leading digital insurer and believe that we’re built for the way that customers buy general insurance both today and in the future; with our key focus being around the use of data and digital capabilities going forwards.

Therefore we are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Senior BI Analyst to join us on our journey to transform our data landscape through the use of cutting edge tools and techniques.

The Role

As a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst you will work across all aspects of our Data Warehouse and Reporting Infrastructure; from analysing requirements for data, information and insights, to making design recommendations for business intelligence solutions to meet those requirements.

You will ensure that data and insights are available where needed and find ways to structure and present this information in order to maximize its value and usability across the business.

You will also supervise the delivery of high-quality business intelligence solutions across Hastings systems and platforms, including overseeing the introduction of new reporting platforms and approaches for Performance Insights users and the wider business data community.

You will also be responsible for overseeing delivery across all aspects of the Data lifecycle and will work closely with our Data Engineering and Data Platform Engineering teams, as well as Business Data users and Change functions.

This is a Hybrid Role and whilst we can be flexible on location, we would expect the successful candidate to work from either our Bexhill (East Sussex) or London (Cannon Street) Office as required/agreed upon with the line manager.

What you will do

  • Interact with other business functions to understand/identify their data needs/requirements and then design and build reports and visualisations (often particularly large/complex) from the supplied specifications; using agreed standards and tools to achieve stable, reliable and easy-to-use output.
  • Carry out analysis of complex data requirements to establish, modify and maintain interpretation into appropriate DB schema within set constraints (consistency, security, ownership); resolving challenging data design briefs with innovative solutions.
  • Use your own detailed knowledge (and relationships with other experts) to investigate information/data sources to establish and assess the integrity of the available information, acting as second line support for production environments.
  • Serve as a technical lead in the evaluation and recommendation of BI tools, definition of hardware requirements and system configurations – including development of reporting models.
  • Create, amend, and keep track of reports and visualisations to ensure these remain in accordance with design and architectural guidance. As well as remaining compliant with the latest data protection/privacy rules.
  • Conduct tests of reports, visualisations and outputs, correcting any errors and re-testing to achieve error-free results.
  • Ensure there is a high standard of testing and quality across the rest of the team.
  • Proactively provide specialist technical and application knowledge on data concepts, object and data modelling techniques and design principles.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of warehouse database architectures, software and facilities and their application in local use.
  • Design solutions that provide fair outcomes to ensure customers’ reasonable expectations are met. Challenging peers and managers alike where processes and procedures do not meet these customer expectations or place our customers’ interests at the heart of how we do business.

What we are looking for

  • 5+ years of practical experience working within a data or technology role, either within a project or corporate environment applying data analysis and data modelling techniques (or an equivalent combination of IT academic qualifications e.g. BSc in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or a related field and some practical experience)
  • BI Reporting and Visualisation Tool knowledge/experience – Cognos, Power BI, Tableau, Looker etc.
  • Strong SQL skills
  • Experience using Snowflake
  • Problem solving capabilities/critical thinking
  • Excellent time management skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills
  • Agile development techniques
  • Business Analysis techniques

Benefits for you

This a real opportunity to make the role your own, whilst making a difference in a fast-paced, flexible and delivery focussed environment.

Some of the great benefits we will give you;

  • Competitive basic salary
  • Car allowance
  • Up to 20% bonus earning potential
  • Pension 1:1 match up to 10%
  • 27 days holiday and bank holidays (plus buy and sell up to 5 days)
  • Life Assurance
  • Discounted Hastings Direct products
