Local Democracy Reporter

Local Democracy Reporter – Liverpool EchoHome and office-based (Liverpool)

From football to music, Liverpool has made its mark on the world. And its political scene is no less exciting. The award-winning Liverpool Echo requires a senior journalist to report on council politics in Liverpool and the city region as part of the Local Democracy Reporting scheme. Our award-winning newsroom is one of the best in the business. We tell stories which change lives, inspire our readers, and uncover injustices which make national headlines and compel politicians to sit up and take notice.

And you won’t just be part of the team at the Echo. You’ll play a pivotal role in the BBC-backed LDR service, seeing your work published across a spectrum of media and receiving industry-leading training. We are looking for someone hungry to dig out amazing stories, run investigations and who is happy to throw themselves into the world of Merseyside politics.

Role Responsibility – You will be a trained journalist based at the Liverpool Echo, working with its brilliant team of dedicated and enthusiastic journalists. You will be responsible for covering Liverpool City Council, ensuring meetings and key decisions in one of the UK’s major cities are extensively covered. You’ll also be responsible for monitoring the work of the city’s regional mayor and wider developments across the city region. As well as your stories appearing online and in print, they will also be accessible to the BBC and other publications and broadcasters throughout the region, bringing a huge potential audience to your work.

The Ideal Candidate – We are looking for an experienced reporter with good knowledge of social media and the way it can be used to drive audience and engagement. We are seeking candidates with formal journalist training (including shorthand and media law) and with two years experience – although in some cases exceptional, newly-qualified journalists may be considered. You must be able to work to tight, daily deadlines and have a shorthand proficiency of 100wpm.

About the Local Democracy Reporting Service – This scheme is designed to increase coverage and scrutiny of councils across the UK. Funded by the BBC and run by media publishers, reporters who join this service provide in-depth coverage of local authorities which will feature on websites, newspapers and broadcasts across their region.
