Local Democracy Reporter (Stirling / North Ayrshire)

Home base with patch reporting

We require an agile, senior journalist to cover two council areas as a Local Democracy Reporter, playing a pivotal role in this BBC-backed public journalism service.

You will work with two of our most-trusted news titles, the Stirling Observer and the Irvine Herald, coordinating with our experienced editorial teams on a thriving and busy news patch.

This role could be based in either of the council areas or a commutable location. We require someone who can manage their time effectively, exercise good news judgement, and is comfortable covering council meetings both in person and via remote technology.

In return, you will receive excellent support and unrivaled training and see your work used across a range of outlets. Shorthand and a qualification in journalism are required for this role.

Role Responsibility

You will be a journalist obsessed with local news. Working closely with two very experienced editors, you will covering the work of Stirling and North Ayrshire councils and the political and social issues affecting local communities. Your stories have the potential to travel far and wide – they will also be accessible to the BBC and other publications and broadcasters throughout the region. Stories uncovered by our team have appeared on the BBC homepage or were followed up by national (sometimes international) outlets..

The ideal candidate

You will be a committed reporter with an NCTJ qualification, experience of working to deadlines, full driving license, alongside a shorthand proficiency of 100wpm. This is a part-time role that would suit someone already in part-time work or with family or other responsibilities – and we can take a flexible approach to the hours worked.

This scheme is designed to increase coverage and scrutiny of councils across the UK.

Funded by the BBC and run by media publishers, these reporters provide in-depth coverage of our local authorities which will feature on websites, newspapers and broadcasts across their region.
