Job Introduction

We’re looking for a senior content editor to lead our newsdesk at the biggest news website in the North East, ChronicleLive, to be based at our hub in the centre of Newcastle.
The role will join a five-person team at the heart of our daily content operation. As the leader of this team, you will be responsible for managing a team of journalists who are producing content for web, app and social media audiences throughout the day. You’ll use audience data to know what content works well, and on what platforms, at the right time of each day.
You’ll brief reporters and photographers to deliver great content – including words, pictures, video, data and interactives – to ensure we get the highest possible levels of audience engagement.
Live coverage is a vital part of life in our digital newsroom. You’ll know when to launch live blogs for big stories, and how to direct our breaking news team to keep momentum as audiences flock to our sites.

We’re looking for someone who has at least two years of newsdesk experience and a strong understanding of how to develop digital content across a range of topics. You’ll also need a sharp news sense, together with excellent accuracy and attention to detail.

Role Responsibility

  • Lead the newsdesk and news reporting team, setting high standards to ensure digital audience and engagement targets are achieved, brand values are met, and that coverage is high-quality, comprehensive, legally safe and essential for the local audience.
  • Organise and oversee content creation and publishing for web, app and social media platforms around live news and key events, ensuring every opportunity is exploited, resource is well-planned and the team is well-briefed.
  • Manage live content schedule and oversee news copy flow across digital platforms, in line with news diary and audience spikes.

The ideal candidate

  • At least two years’ newsroom or content management experience and full NCTJ-accredited senior qualifications including media law are essential, and people management experience is desirable.
  • You’ll need to be creative and energetic, with excellent social media savvy and the ability to thrive under pressure.
  • Experience of publishing via digital content management systems and video editing would be advantageous.
  • The role involves being comfortable working at pace and under deadline pressure. You’ll also need to be flexible covering early and late shifts on a rota, including weekends.
