An exciting opportunity is now available to join the Reach PLC’s data team in the role of Head of Engineering. The data team of over 50 staff offers data services to a wide array of clients across the business from Insights to Machine learning.
The Head of Engineering is a key role in ensuring that these organisations can fulfil their purpose in planning and delivering the best services for patients.
Working within a team of data experts, the Head of Engineering will lead the provisioning of data platforms and tooling underpinning numerous internal and customer facing services.
100% home based (UK & Ireland). We can accommodate office work for those who can commute to our Canary Wharf office.

Building and maintaining data pipelines and ensure our products are robust, performant, safe and cost effective
Ensuring data processes are automated through a range of technologies including AWS Step Functions and Eventbridge.
Producing and presenting initial solution ‘end to end’ prototypes as working models for evaluation and in preparation for full scale development and deployment
Maintaining an effective data architecture and operational service model that is scalable and agile enough to meet varying use cases
Managing the deployment of solutions into a fully managed and maintained operational environment following appropriate release and change control
Providing support to client/customer data solutions acting as a lead specialist consultant.
The ideal candidate
Ownership of technical architecture and design of our Data Platforms
Ability to lead and develop a team of engineers
Experience in manipulation of complex data, data processes, products and platforms
Experience in automating data processing through specialist software, scripting and development tools
Experience of operating within a semi-structured data environment following Agile methodologies. Good understanding of source control (e.g. git)
Experience of working with 3rd party vendors and handling immature data models, and understanding replayability and historical immutability in complex pipelines.
An ability to innovate to tackle problems
Highly developed skills in Athena and AWS platforms to ingest, process and provision data.
Excellent skills in at least one commonly used programming language (Scala, NodeJS, Python) to automate data processing and a demonstrable ability to quickly learn new languages
Ability to interpret, review, analyse, test and optimise technical processes and guide and mentor other members of the team.
Knowledge of data manipulation tools and techniques including (but not limited to) Apache Spark/AWS Glue/Athena
Knowledge of Data Lakes and processes involved therein, including handling sensitive (personal) data and how to make such data GDPR compliant.
Knowledge of docker containers, their deployment and usage for data ingestion at scale.
