InYourArea, an innovative and emerging product from Reach PLC, is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Fullstack Engineer to help us deliver the next stage of its product life-cycle.
InYourArea is the UK’s leading neighbourhood platform for news, views & things to do. Serving millions of loyal customers every month with personalised hyper-local news, information and services across our app, website and social channels, we’re extremely proud of its many achievements to date.
We leverage a customer focused lean approach of delivery, to ensure we can drive innovation at pace, underpinned by a robust framework appropriate to support a product entering it’s scale-up phase.
InYourArea has experienced rapid growth over the last two years and the engineering team will be vital to the challenge of transitioning into and establishing a successful maturing of the product.
So, who are we?
Every day our newsbrands – national and regional, in print and online – reach millions of people up and down the country. We are the UK’s largest news publisher and 6th largest digital organisation.
There are 47m online readers in the UK, 30.8m of who get local news from the Live network – 65% of all adults. Our network of over 70 websites provides 24/7 coverage of news, sport and showbiz stories, with 8.1 billion page views per year.
You will work on our front end platform that powers inyourarea.co.uk and its auxiliary sites which consist of a modern tech stack that includes the use of React, Typescript and NextJS.
You will also be involved in backend NodeJS development. This will be for the various services and systems that power the InYourArea platform. This consists of REST API services and AWS Lambda functions that are mostly built in Typescript and use MongoDB as a data store.
We are a small and cohesive team, who have the responsibility for building software in the way we feel most comfortable. We aim for fast delivery while maintaining quality and a focus on improving the software we work on.
We employ a Continuous Delivery approach which means that we can deploy to production multiple times a day.
The ideal candidate
We use AWS extensively, and we provision our own resources (using AWS CDK and Cloudformation), so some knowledge of AWS will help. We expect to mentor you in this aspect though.
We have adopted Agile and Scrum processes to help focus our efforts on delivering features of high quality whilst still being rapid and responsive. Our squads are self managing and define their own personalised ways of working to suit their needs. Suggestions for changes and improvements are always welcome and encouraged.
There are cross team learning opportunities within the team with the wider IYA team utilising React Native for app development – and our data team utilising Python/Go for their services.
We strive to receive real feedback from what we’ve built in the form of real user stats, as quickly as possible after we’ve built it, and we relentlessly do whatever we can to drive this time-to-feedback downward. We deploy changes to Production as often as possible.
We are comfortable with the fact that our decisions and the result of our work will be proven wrong by stats, and adapt very quickly.
We own our work with pride.
