Crime Reporter

A rare opportunity has arisen to join the award-winning Liverpool Echo as a crime reporter. This is a senior role in the newsroom and the perfect next step for an ambitious senior reporter wanting to make a name for themselves in regional journalism.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and passionate journalist with an ability to forge meaningful relationships within the criminal justice service ensuring the Echo remains the leader in delivering trusted breaking news within the Liverpool City Region.

They are also expected to deliver insightful and considered long-form content examining the impact of crime on the lives of our large, loyal and engaged readership.

Our new crime reporter will have a real passion for storytelling, a desire to experiment with new and innovative techniques and the ability to inform and inspire our readers and make a real difference to their lives.

We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds and candidates who understand the issues that are important to our region’s many different communities.

Key Responsibilities

What will the role involve?

  • Making meaningful contacts within the police, Crown Prosecution Service and other relevant agencies
  • Building relationships with communities across the Liverpool City Region
  • Leading crime coverage in the Liverpool Echo newsroom
  • Directing breaking news crime coverage
    Using social media to engage our audience and sharing content
  • Taking a lead on customer value strategy initiatives including a dedicated Liverpool Echo newsletter and other group-wide initiatives
  • Acting as an ambassador for the Liverpool Echo
  • Ensure every piece of content is thoroughly researched and balanced prior to publication, in accordance with the Editor’s Code of practice
The Ideal Candidate

Who are we looking for?

  • An NCTJ qualification
  • A good self-starter who finds stories relevant to our audience, makes contacts and knows how to work a patch
  • Ability to build communities and engage proactively with our audience
  • A skilled user of social media to engage audience, source ideas and share content
  • Experience of covering live, breaking news
  • A strong storyteller with a thorough understanding of how to create engaging content
  • The highest personal standards of professionalism and integrity at all times within the framework of current legislation and Reach PLC’s editorial and company policies
  • Maintain a thorough, up-to-date knowledge of media law and IPSO code
  • A good team player who is able to work quickly and willing to learn flexibly
  • Knowledge of SEO or a willingness to learning
    Understanding of analytics
