NATS is the UK’s leading air navigation service provider, handling over 2 million flights each year. As an integral part of NATS Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) function which is contracted to deliver the UK Aeronautical Information Service, this pivotal subject matter expert role is responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of AIXM data-driven aeronautical charts and other graphical products and chart types compiled from a wide variety of sources to deliver clear and concise data every 28 days.
There are over 1200 Aeronautical charts produced by UK AIS, approximately 125 charts are updated every 28 days. Each chart is used directly or indirectly by every major airline and GA pilot operating in the UK. This role is responsible for the release and delivery of aeronautical data ensuring that they are fully informed of the quality and its limitations.
What you’ll do:

Responsible for minimising AIM’s services and products contribution to the risk of aircraft accident as far as is reasonably possible

Responsible for detailed data verification and issue resolution before suspect data is used in AIM cartographic products, and liable for the integrity of any data provided to customers on a commercial basis

Responsible for manipulating aeronautical data in a quality assured environment and capable of producing quality-controlled products

Responsible to remain competent in the production methods and standards of up to 15 ICAO aeronautical chart specifications

Responsible to collaboratively develop and maintain procedures for data management, data handling and IAIP production, as part of NATS Business Management System (BMS) and the principles of the Safety Management System (SMS), and as required for compliance to relevant national, international regulation and legislation
Who you’ll be:

BTEC/ONC (or preferably have an HTEC/HNC) or equivalent in Cartography and Surveying with professional experience within the field of cartography

Demonstrable operational Aviation experience and knowledge of Co-ordinate systems and associated aeronautical data and information including Magnetism, Maps and Charts, Co-ordinate systems, map projections, Avionics, AIXM/AICM, ARINC 424, Navigation Systems including; ground-based, space-based and airborne systems, Radar performance, Mathematics (A-level or equivalent), and AIS provision

Demonstrable understanding of chart user requirements. Obtained either through detailed aeronautical cartographic experience and/or via the acquisition of a Private Pilot’s Licence

Demonstrable understanding of ICAO Annex 4, ICAO Chart Manual, & end to end chart production processes

Demonstrable experience or understanding of common formats used for the exchange of Digital Aeronautical Information is desirable.

Good knowledge of ICAO Annexes 15 and Docs 8126, 8400, 8168

Analytical, systems-thinking approach to complex tasks in a workflow-based environment

Ability to work within a small team of highly qualified experienced staff

Excellent IT skills with particular relevance to aeronautical cartographic packages
